Digital Storytellers for Social Change
Digital Storytellers for Social Change – or DiSSC – is a participatory video-based storytelling technique. The DiSSC model is all about building people’s capacities so that they can design and tell their stories in a way that is engaging, effective, and can lead to a positive change.
We believe that stories, if told in the right way at the right time to the right people, can be powerful way to bring about collaborative social change.

Why Video Based Storytelling?
The impact of the video format for storytelling is well documented. Using this effective and accessible format, individuals and organizations can not only tell and share their own stories, but they can also take their stories to authorities and decision-makers who can support them in fashioning practical, local solutions effectively.
The backbone of the DiSSC model is the video stories shot and packaged by trained individuals can facilitate solutions to local problems. This can be viewed as a new form of advocacy.
Smart phone penetration and social media platforms have made communities, especially young people, interested in the video format as an effective way of expressing themselves. Young people’s interest in using their mobile phones to make videos can be leveraged to nudge them to use this method of expression for advocacy, development, and social change within their own communities.
We envisage this medium of solution identification to trigger conversations and actions that are community-led instead of a top-down approach of being led by authorities and decision makers who may not be directly impacted by the issues at hand. Any member of a community or group can use this method of video-based storytelling as an advocacy tool for any related issue they may want to take up. When implemented properly, this model provides community members the required tools, skills, and confidence to find solutions to other problems in their respective communities.
Video-based storytelling can be leveraged for:

The DiSSC Model
The DiSSC model focuses on building capacities of individuals to identify issues in their surroundings and devise techniques to trigger solution building.
These videos can be used to bring together local authorities, community members, social workers and/or other key actors to work towards a local, sustainable and cost-effective solution.
Through the DiSSC model we aim to build capacities of individuals to document their stories and experiences with the help of a mobile phone. This content is, then, packaged into short, impactful videos that can be disseminated to the target group to encourage action on long-term solutions.
We conduct a hands-on, interactive workshop where participants learn to identify issues, conduct basic research, script stories; then shoot, package, and disseminate their videos. The process has been customized for low-resource settings so that those with a simple smart phone and access to a personal or community computer/laptop (for editing) can participate. Our workshops are also designed to identify natural community leaders and train them to effectively package and disseminate their stories to advocate for sustainable solutions.
Identify key issues and the target audience who can bring change.
Build capacities by providing training and tools for digitala storytelling.
Rescearh, script, and shoot the video(s)
Share videos with target audience to trigger call to action.
The long-term impact of this intervention will be that community members will have increased capacities and effective tools to highlight the issues that most impact their day-to day lives and articulate them to the right authorities/sources so that a tangible sustainable solution is implemented.
